Questions and Answers about Botox

Why is everyone so excited about Botox?
Botox helps people look younger by reducing – and often totally eliminating – hyperkinetic facial lines around the eyes and between the eyebrows that appear and deepen as we get older.

How does it work?
Your physician injects the Botox into facial muscles in the forehead and around the eyes. The Botox smooths the lines by relaxing the muscles. The effects appear in five to seven days and last about three months. Because Botox is a biological material, the body eventually breaks it down. Patients typically return to their physician every three months or so for another round of injections.

What is Botox?
The product is made from a purified protein derivative of the bacteria, clostridium botulinum.

Is Botox safe?
Yes. It was approved by the Food and Drug Administration for reducing facial lines. It has had FDA approval for more than a decade to treat muscle spasms in the eyelids, neck and vocal chords.

Any side effects?
Possible side effects are pain, some bruising, headaches, and eyelid or eyebrow drooping if it diffuses into the wrong muscles.

Are there other cosmetic treatments?
Yes. The dermatology specialists at Dermatology Clinic of Jackson offer many cosmetic treatments, including...

  • Chemical peels to remove wrinkles, brown spots, acne and other skin conditions.
  • Collagen injections to fill in wrinkles between the cheeks and mouth.
  • Sclerotherapy injections to destroy unsightly spider veins in the legs.
